Description Of The Island Of Númenor - J.R.R. Tolkien
The Unfinished Tales
Description Of The Island Of Númenor
Audiobook
A Description of the Island of Númenor, published in Unfinished Tales, was supposedly derived from the archives of Gondor. Numenor was in the Great Sea, closer to Aman in the West than Middle-earth in the East. In shape, it was a star, with five peninsulas extending from the central region, which was around 250 miles (400 km) across. Karen Wynn Fonstad estimated the island to be 167,691 square miles [435,017 km2] in area. Numenor had six main regions: the five promontories, named Andustar, Hyarnustar, Hyarrostar, Orrostar, and Forostar; and the central area, Mittalmar, which contained the capital city Armenolos. The fifth king Tar-Meneldur built a tower in Forostar to watch the stars.
Here was Armenelos, the City of Kings, and the sacred mountain Meneltarma, where religious processions took place, 3 times per year. On its southern slope was Noirinan, the Valley of the Graves. It was guarded by the eagles of Manwë, one of the 2 species of birds mentioned in the chapter, the other being the Kirinki.
Starting with the Northlands, each cape is described in turn: Forostar, where the Eagles of Manwë dwelt and where the mountain Sorontil stood next to the sea. Andustar had 3 bays on its western side, the first being Andúnië, which held the city with the same name, the largest on the island and harbor for the Elves of Eressëa. Here, the beauty of Eldalondë is described and its greatest treasures were the majestic trees: Oiolairë, Lairelossë, Nessamelda, Vardarianna, Taniquelassë, Yavannamírë and Malinornë. The 2 rivers of the island, Nunduinë, and Siril flowed on each side of Hyarnustar, while in Hyarrostar grew Laurinquë, a tree whose only purpose was to charm the people with its beauty. Of Orrostar little is told, only that grains could be cultivated in this cold part of the island.
A description of the people follows, mostly Edain skilled in riding, shaping of terrible war weapons, especially bows, and also in building of the ships used to sail towards Middle-earth, the first one to succeed being Vëantur. Many of the legendary weapons were put to saving here, among them Tuor's axe and the bow of Bregor, as well as the Ring of Barahir, the only artifact to survive the Downfall of Númenor.
This account first describes, in outline and then detail, the geography of Númenor and its mountain, Meneltarma, and its sacred character. The public speakings of the Númenórean kings at the mountain are explained, namely at the times of Erukyermë, Erulaitalë, and Eruhantalë, as are the proceedings of anyone ascending the mountain.
The fertility, flora, and terrain of all regions of the island are then told of, such as the fragrant evergreen trees (Nísimaldar) around the Bay of Eldanna and the laurinquë tree of yellow flowers. The rest of the account covers the roads of Númenor, the common mode of transportation, which was horseback, the craftsmanship of the Númenóreans, their weapons, and their composition, and lastly the love that all able Númenóreans had for maritime affairs. The first Númenórean explorers in their naval expeditions are said to have followed in the footsteps of Círdan, the Elven Shipwright. The chapter ends with a note on the Guild of Venturers and on Tar-Aldarion its founder, who is the subject of the succeeding chapter.

Chapter 3 - Of the Coming of the Elves & the Captivity of Melkor - J.R.R. Tolkien
Damn, humans had it rough: no guidance in the beginning, just hanging out with tree elves after they pass their stone age. Imitating the High Elves later on, getting made fun of as the Heavy Handed ones. This chapter doesn't really explain how humans came about, just that they were there when the Sun and Moon were instated. I wonder why Tolkien decided to leave this stuff a mystery.
"Filled with wrath and despair. He mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone and none might restrain him. He passed over door Anfauglith like a wind amidst the dust and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Orome himself has come for a great madness of rage was upon him so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the valar." I just got chills on this. In simple logic, it's like a one big giant fuck you moment to morgoth.

Evil have been all thy ways, son of Húrin. Thankless fosterling, outlaw, slayer of thy friend, thief of love, usurper of Nargothrond, captain foolhardy, and deserter of thy kin.
Perfectly read, you made the Silmarillion better and somehow more sad for me when it concluded. Thanks Pamko 🙏
My pleasure 😊
one good thing is that this book will probably never be corrupted by film making companies.
So true 🙂
I started reading this in 9th grade about79 and I wish I could have coupled it with audio but... It wasn't really invented yet. Of course my favorite parts were the Appendices.
🙂
Nice work dude thanks
Any time 🙂
Re-watch let's do this lol
😊
Amazing!! Thankyou for this i will have to go back and start the journey again
Tnx 🙂

I still cannot get over how fantastic this production is! I have shared this playlist with so many other fans over the last year ❤️🤩
Thank you 😊
Ty for adding the map and pictures. I always wonder where the characters are when they travel.
You’re welcome 🙂
The writers of Rings of Power should take notes from this
Yes 😎
Finally 👍👍☑️

Hearing here again, because my silmarillion book got stolen.

Simply beautiful. The closure of such a massive world lies heavily on my mind and heart. Thanks Tolkien and thank you Pamko for this journey 👊
You’re welcome 😇
"Not the first" said Mandos. Cold blooded.
😱
It just breaks my heart knowing how amazing the story is, and how they ruined it in rings of power😢
So true 😶
Awesome sauce, my friend. Thank you, kindly.
You’re welcome
It doesn't matter how many times I read this, the betrayal of the Easterlings kills me. Huor and Hurin covering the rear guard for Turgon's retreat makes me tear up. The strength and bravery of the dwarves always pumps me up.
🙂🙂
Breathtaking
😊
Eee-loove-ah-tar

thank you
You're welcome
Brilliant. Thank you for your time and effort doing this ✊
No problem 😊
If I were to suggest when to start a TV series of the Silmarillion, I'd begin here with the Unchaining of Melkor, and leave any necessary earlier portions to flashbacks. It's with the Melkor's freeing that the plot really moves into gear.
🤔👍
Thank you shipmaster from halo

This is awesome thank you. But i can't help seeing moses from south park reading to me😅

Idril and Maeglin 😢 (I’m literally Maeglin)
😧
The creators of Rings of Power could benefit from this info
😉
The map of Beleriand at the start is so innacurate, it was never that big. That's just a recent thing people are doing and I have no idea why.
🤷🏻
So excellent! Keep them coming!
Tnx 🙂

i wish some great composer would write an opera for Beren and Luthien
Me too 🙂
Rip 🙏🏻 Fingolfin. Bravest of the Elves. Godspeed.
So true 🙂
Maeglin has been doing a whole lotta "saying nothing"
😂
It's sad to see the early complaints of the Numenoreans. "Why not go and greet our friends?" It's like a child wondering why they can't visit their grandparents who live five hours drive away, and their parents having to explain that they're busy doing the stuff that puts food on the table. To think some innocent questioning was the start to a slide into the worst fall in literature since Paradise Lost. Also, its fascinating to consider how the Numenoreans helped men to advance and start pushing back the darkness. I see a lot of fanart and speculation based on their adventuring or the last years under Ar-Pharazôn, but I wouldn't mind something of them teaching the ancestors of the Bree men and Rohirrim how to cut wood or ride horses.
